Tema General Hospital boss laud MTN for maternity block

The Medical Director of the Tema General Hospital has eulogized MTN Ghana Foundation for ending the woes of pregnant women who deliver at the facility.

Dr. Kwabena Opoku Adusei said the new 40-bed capacity maternity block has eased congestion at the health facility which hitherto saw new mothers sharing beds.

He made the comment during a tour of the facility by staff of MTN Ghana Foundation.

Dr. Opoku Adusei expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for the gesture and appealed to the Government to complete projects that were started at the Hospital years ago but abandoned.

A Senior Nursing Officer and Second in-charge of the Labour Ward, Mrs Alice Amanor expressed joy about the relief the facility had brought to them.

She said the wards in the new facility had been built in a way that provided easy access to patients by the midwives when in distress.

The Senior Nursing Officer noted that, the beds provided by MTN were comfortable to allow the monitoring of the different stages of labour of an expectant mother and help her to deliver on the same bed.

Mrs. Amanor said with a built-in theatre, they were able to monitor the foetus in the mothers’ uterus and rush the mother to the theatre for an emergency caesarean session whenever the need arose.

“We have a comfortable cervical assessment room compared to the other site where we had a small corner for the assessment to an extent that there was no privacy.”

She disclosed that within the six weeks of commissioning the Block, more than 500 deliveries have been recorded with 525 babies and no deaths.

Mrs. Amanor said the new Block had attracted many pregnant women who came for healthcare services because of the ultramodern equipment.

She assured MTN that the facility would be maintained to prolong its lifespan adding that a workshop had been held to train the staff on how best to use the equipment.

The project, which started in November 2016 to commemorate MTN Ghana’s 20th anniversary, is expected to benefit over 22,000 women in Tema and its environs annually.

The newly built facility has equipment including anaesthesia machine, diathermy machine, incubator, baby cot, patient monitors, infusion pump, and radiant warmer.

It also has a seven-bed monitoring and recovery ward, nurses’ station and changing rooms, sluice rooms, pantry and store, two consultation rooms, two doctors’ offices and restrooms, as well as nurses’ office and restroom.
