Rahman Anum of Exchequers became the hero for his side when his lone goal against Ghana Revenue Service (GRA) won Exchequers the trophy at stake in their Homowo gala final.
After losing 2-3 to Police on penalties in their opening match, Exchequers, who won the Sapholda Hockey League two weeks ago to qualify for the Africa Hockey Cup for Club Champions (AHCCC), redoubled their effort to overpower Reformers 2-0 in the second match of the all-play-all Homowo Gala fiesta.
Considered as the arch-rivals in the Sapholda Hockey League in Accra, the Homowo Festival gala became another platform for Exchequers and GRA Men to exhibit their skills.
As their respective fans cheered them on in their third match which was to determine the winner, the two sides exhibited much firepower in midfield and attack, but built strong walls to ward off all attacks from their opponents.
In the end, it was Rahman Anum who became the cynosure of all eyes when he sneaked through the defence of GRA midway in the second quarter to fire home to the admiration of his teammates and the fans.
Anum’s lone goal once again gave Exchequers the bragging rights over GRA Men, whom they dethroned to emerge champions of the 2018 Sapholda Hockey League and earned the ticket to represent Ghana for the first time in 10 years in the AHCCC scheduled for Abuja in December.
Police Ladies also emerged as the Homowo champions after they exhibited much firepower to lift the trophy after defeating Sapholda League champions, GRA Ladies, 2-1 on penalties.
On their way to victory, Police Ladies extinguished Extinguishers Ladies 1-0 in their opening match, reformed Reformers Ladies 2-0 on penalties after settling for a scoreless draw in the second match, before adding GRA Ladies to their victims to become the Homowo Festival Ladies Gala champions.
