The ITU Telecom World 2018 kicked off and hosted influential figures from government and industry to connect with tech SMEs and entrepreneurs. Apple also had their annual hardware event where they announced a trio of new iPhones alongside other new devices.

IT News Africa had the chance to sit down with Robert Lipovsky, Senior Malware Researcher at ESET, to chat about the biggest cybersecurity issues out there right now and also to touch on how cyber threats have evolved over the years.

From thriving tech entrepreneurs in Africa to growing economies here is a round up of some of the popular stories for the week.

Google introduces new pixel smartphone 2018

Google has been fairly consistent with its Pixel smartphone releases. The original Google Pixel launched back on October 4, 2016, which was a Tuesday. It then went on sale on Tuesday, October 25 that same year. Then last year’s Google Pixel 2 was announced on Wednesday, October 4 – the exact same date as the original phone’s debut. It went on sale more quickly, however, landing in stores on Thursday, October 19. Read more.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are two of the most talked about technologies today. They are predicted to achieve miraculous things and remarkable shifts in how healthcare is managed and delivered. However, the reality today is not quite the hyped up ideas of robot surgeons and virtual nurses. Airtel Nigeria offers “Double data” on Infinix, Tecno and itel smartphones

Telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, has announced a strategic partnership that will enable Infinix, Tecno or itel customers who purchase a new smartphone to enjoy the exclusive Airtel ‘Double Data Offer’ for a six-month period. The offer is available to both new and existing Airtel customers. Read more.

Cybercrime remains a looming threat in the ICT sector and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Cybercriminals continue to find new and sophisticated ways to override security protocols for malicious purposes. In 2017, we saw the rise of ransomware as it swept through both large and small-scale businesses, wherein 2018 there was greater interest in the theft of intellectual property and attacks on governmental institutions by APTs. Vodacom Tanzania appoints new acting MD

Hisham Hendi has been appointed as Vodacom Tanzania’s acting managing director, effective as of 1 September. Hendi will hold the position until Sylvia Mulinge, an earlier appointment struggling to get a work permit from the Tanzanian government, can take office. Hendi first joined the company in 2016 as Director of the Consumer Business Unit. He also has over fifteen years of commercial experience in the global telecommunications industry, which include commercial positions at both Vodafone and Vodacom Group. Read more.

Apple unveils iPhone XS, XS Max and XR

Apple had their annual hardware event where they announced a trio of new iPhones alongside other new devices that will be on the market soon after the announcement. The new flagship iPhones, the XS, XS Max, and XR, feature hardware upgrades like a new chipset and better durability and performance, but so far they aren’t standouts compared to previous models like the iPhone X or even the 8. As most global markets experience growth, South Africa remains in an economic quagmire. Due to credit rating downgrades, a volatile currency, and lower contributions to GDP from the country’s major economic spinners – the agriculture, manufacturing, and mining sectors – the country is experiencing stubbornly high unemployment and anaemic economic growth. LG South Africa unveils new WhatsApp service

LG Electronics South Africa (LG) has unveiled its WhatsAppservice for customers. Speaking about the new service, CY Kim, Managing Director of LG South Africa said, “One of our main objectives at LG is to make life easier for our customers. Instead of them phoning a call centre and waiting to be attended to, we thought we’d take the frustration out of this process. With our WhatsApp service, customers simply text one of our agents and while they’re waiting for a reply, they can engage in other activities,”. Read more.
